Princeton University
Summer Journalism Program

Think you’re the next Soledad O’Brien or Anderson Cooper? Learn from reporters and editors at the New York Times, CNN and ABC, and take a shot at covering the news in a free 10-day program.
Requirements: The program is designed for current juniors who have at least a 3.5 unweighted GPA and whose parents combined annual income is less than $45,000.
Deadline: Feb. 20

Coca-Cola Pre-College Leadership Program at Morehouse College
You can’t lead others until you understand yourself. That’s why participants in this week-long program engage in activities like mask-making, ropes courses and Tai Chi beyond the usual lectures and workshops.
Requirements: Current sophomore, junior and college-bound senior males must have a minimum 3.0 unweighted GPA. There is $400 registration fee if accepted; some scholarships are available.

Boys State, Girls State
Take civics beyond the classroom with these free week-long leadership programs at Georgia Southern University, sponsored by the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary.
Requirements and Deadline: Applicants must be sponsored by a local American Legion or American Legion Auxiliary unit. Interested current juniors should see their high school counselors for details.

Army Education Outreach Program
If protractors and test tubes are your tools of choice, you won’t want to miss this opportunity to spend the summer researching with pros in U.S. Army or university labs. Choose between the Science & Engineeding Apprenticeship Program (SEAP) or Research & Engineering Apprenticeship Program (REAP). Both 8-week programs pay apprentices and pair them with mentors.
Requirements: While there is no minimum GPA, most successful applicants have taken AP courses in math and science.
Deadline: Feb. 27

CDC Disease Detective Camp
Get an inside look at how the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention handles public health with lectures, experiments and even a mock press conference. The five-day camp is free and offered twice this summer.
Requirements: Current sophomores and juniors must be at least 16 by July 23.

City Year
If you’re graduating, but not quite ready for college or sure of what to do, City Year may be for you. Spend 10 months volunteering here in the U.S. or South Africa with Americorps. Volunteers receive a weekly stipend, health coverage and nearly $5,000 goes toward college.

Requirements: Applicants must be at least 17 and have graduated high school or obtained a GED.
